The use of Zilpaterol in cattle finishing feeds

Zilpaterol Hydrochloride (ZH) is a non-steroidal growth enhancer. It improves carcass mass gain and feed conversion (FCR) in feedlot cattle. It also improves the muscle-to-fat ratio of the carcass by reducing the depositing of fat and increasing overall carcass mass.

ZH is a synthetic beta adrenergic agonist (BAA). The mode of action of BAA is to activate the beta receptors in muscle and fat cells, which drives the increase of fat degradationand decreases fat mobilisation. Furthermore, this process prevents protein degradationand enhances muscle growth. With the supplementation of a BAA of this kind, beef carcass yield and muscle content is improved.

ZH is almost 100% bioavailable following oral ingestion due to the ease and speed with which it is absorbed. The concentration in the animal peaks within hours and is almost eliminated within 72 hours via urine and faeces.

The economic benefits of using ZH is that it increases final body weight, average daily gain (ADG) and dressing percentage. On the other hand, it lowers feed intake, feed conversion (FCR) and fat thickness on the 12th rib.

ZH is only to be fed to terminal slaughter lines, never to reproductive animals. ZH is fed to cattle the last 20 – 40 days of the fattening process, dependent on breed, age, sex, and diet of the animal. This is followed by a withdrawal period of 3 days before slaughter. The dosage is 0,15 mg of ZH per kg of body weight per day.

Feedtek and Lavendula now offers farmers who would like to make use of this additive in their feedlots theoption and convenience of having ZH premixed with Beef Gainer 110. This will enable you to easily add and evenly disperse the correct level of this ingredient into your animals’ feed. This will further improve the already excellent results that farmers are achieving with the use of  Beef Gainer 110.
